With this cape ,as well as being inspired by reusing denim, I was inspired by a beautiful blue glass bottle I have in my kitchen which I wanted to put the shape of the long neck into my design. I also like the idea of using clothes to be incognito so I incorporated the collar to cover the face.
It’s important for me that when I make something reusing my denim it doesn’t look patchwork but possibly thought through and not just thrown together. This piece I had to buy the jeans from the charity shops. It is better if you can get people to kindly donate them. So I alternated the the shades after I cut them up. I didn’t unpick the seams that takes too long!!
The pattern used was a jacket pattern which I had to adapt, all new to me but I loved the challenge. The neck was the creative part. I did want to use foam in it and quilt it but my tutor said his sewing machines wouldn’t go through it, so thats why it flops over. Never mind. I just loved making it. I try not to waste anything that’s why the bum pockets got used for the collar and I just bought a cheap belt to use as a fastener, and add a touch of colour. Just a wee touch.
